An Internet History of The Great War

|
"Facts are mere accessories to the truth, and we do not invite to our hearth the guest who can only remind us that on such a day we suffered calamity. Still less welcome is he who would make a Roman holiday of our misfortunes. Exaggeration of what was monstrous is quickly recognised as a sign of egotism, and that contrarious symptom of the same disease which pretends that what is accepted as monstrous was really little more than normal is equally unwelcome."
Max Plowman from Subaltern on the Somme

May 2008 Group With Some Poilu Reenactors
At Verdun Memorial Museum |
- On our September 6-12, 2008 "Experiencing the Great War of 1914-1918", three of the greatest battlefields of the First World War--one each from the start, middle years and end--will be visited. Tour members will be able to see the terrain and how weapons, tactics and strategy evolved through the war. An optional day-trip to the Paris Air Museum is also included.(See flyer.)
- This focused program begins just northeast of Paris for a monumental reenactment of the opening of the First Battle of the Marne, arguably the war's most important battle. Additional major stops include a reconnaisance of the tragic Somme Battlefields of Picardy, the key points of 1918's Second Battle of the Marne and concludes with a visit to the Armistice Glade at Compiegne. Estimated price (Double Occupancy): $2,195
- On our April 28 - May 9, 2009 trip, all the Major Battlefields will be visited, including the Ypres Salient, Vimy Ridge, the Somme, Chateau-Thierry, the Champagne, Verdun & St. Mihiel. Estimated price (Double Occupancy): $3,495
- Special Feature: We will be making a special study of America's Meuse-Argonne Offensive, the dealiest battle ever waged by the U.S. military. Visited will be the original jump-off line, Montfaucon, Vacquois, Varennes, the Lost Battalion, Sgt. York, the Frank Luke crash site, Romagne, the November 1st breakthrough, the November 10th Marne crossings and Noyers-Pont Maguis overlooking strategically important Sedan.

Welcome
|
You are at the "Trenches" Home Page. These pages contain information on the people, places, and events that comprised one of the worst calamities of modern history. Entire kingdoms were to vanish in the clash. The map makers of the world would be busy indeed!
The trenches are set up in such a way as to allow you to explore the "The Great War" at your own pace and in your own manner. If you don't know where to start then the Reference Library is a good bet. It is a complete catalog of everything out here. Then again, if you know what you are looking for, you can go right to the 1914-1918 Super Search Facility (although I'd hate to think you're in a hurry to get out of here).
