Ortigara

Site of Forgotten 1917 Battle


In June, 1917, Ortigara, the highest and northernmost ridge of the Trentino Plateau, known as the Altipiano, was the site of a brutal battle. Heavy artillery, flame throwers and gas were all used by the combatants. The stark, rocky land captured in Richard Galli's photos below still reflect memories of the struggle which became renown in Italy as the Calvary of the Alpini.
