3. Over two years the Italian Comando Supremo mounted eleven offensives to cross the Isonzo [Soca] River and penetrate the mountains beyond. All failed. In October 1917, the Central Powers mounted their own offense, known as the Battle of Caporetto, which resulted in one of the greatest successes of the First World War. A major breakthrough was made near the town of Tolmino shown above.
