11. In Northern Italy, several high plateaus are located between the coastal zone near the Adriatic and the high Alps further inland. Two tablelands of the wildest limestone geology imaginable, the Carso [shown above] and the Bainsezza, are positioned south of the Julian Alps and were the site of relentless struggle during the war.
